I agree with the concept that tipping would make employees work harder. Just like I agree with Marxism / Leninism, in theory. But they both don't work for the same reason -- Human nature.

In theory, a person working on tips would try harder because they need the tips. But in reality, that's not the case. As the guy above stated, tip pools make personal attribution unnecessary. Even without a tip pool, the minimum wage in most countries, if not all, that allow employees to survive off tips is very low, which affects employees in positions that don't even receive tips.

I get paid $20 an hour to do my job. People in America would get paid half that and expect the remaining half from tips. Here's the difference: If I don't do my job properly, I get fired. If you don't do your job properly, you get fired and your income is insufficient to survive off.
