My guess is that in the future Earth will be so populated and polluted that when we'll have the technology to colonize other planets/asteroids/sattelites/whatever, we will leave this planet as soon as possible. Problem is that only the rich would be able to, and the poor would be forced to either stay on earth, or live on the asteroids the rich have bought and treat them as their kings/presidents/leaders.

If we have to technology to terraform (which would certainly be required to populate another planet) then I'm pretty sure pollution would be an easy problem to solve.
Population and power are good reasons to populate other planets though.

There's this island in Japan where there is so much volcanic activity and air pollution that everybody has to wear a gas mask 24/7.

And there are a lot more disasters that could happen which would pollute earth, like the ocean getting filled with oil, or nuclear powerplants getting destroyed by earthquakes.
