As SF said, The court case would most likely exceed the cost of the camera itself so it'd be just stupid.
There's nothing he can legally do.
There's absolutely no evidence he can use to show that you broke it.
Even if he has pictures of it beforehand, It means nothing because it does not mean that the camera 'broke' during the time you had it,
It simply means that the camera was fine at the time that the picture was taken, Nothing else.
I suggest ignoring him because he's got no case and was only threatening you to scare you and get some money off you.

So if he bought it for $200, you would pay him $200 to buy another camera. |
Actually, not true. If you bought the car for 200 and it's worth 500, you'd get 500 as it's what the car was worth.
