I'd suggest holding off Katakana for awhile, katakana is useless to learn in the beginning considering the only part of speech that uses katakana are nouns, and you can't form a complete japanese sentence with only nouns.

Instead, I'd definitely recommend learning the numbers (hiragana ONLY).

After numbers, I'd focus more on vocab words, simple sentences, and culturally formal phrases in hiragana.

Japanese for obvious reasons?

French is spoken in a lot of countries, I think it would help you more. Also seems a lot easier to learn, and it's similar to Spanish which would be useful if you ever decide to learn Spanish, which is an other language that is spoken in a lot of countries. Spanish on its turn is similar to Portuguese.

Here's a list of good French and French-Belgian films, though French humor is kind of a distinct kind of humor so you might not like it and there's also some (to a lot of) satire in them which you probably won't get if you're not from Belgium or France, but I think you'll enjoy the movies nonetheless.

Dikkenek
Le Tout Nouveau Testament
Banlieue 13
Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis
Rien à Déclarer
Taxi, Taxi 2, Taxi 3

If you end up deciding to learn Dutch there's a lot more great movies and series I can recommend! Dutch Belgian humor is way better than French Belgian humor imo, though also very different so it's hard to compare.

With all these things taken into account, I've decided on French first, Japanese some time down the road. It would probably be easier to learn a foreign language closer to English first, then move onto an even more complicated one afterwards.

It's actually they love the idea of being Japanese and anime culture, but then when it comes to actually learning the language and what it means to be a japanese person(in the nation, not here in freedom land), they always drop out of the first class or few classes. I would know I saw it happen. Same thing with French.

The longer you wait the harder it is to learn a new language.
