Also, I heard that you shouldn't cheap out on a motherboard but I don't see why not? As long as everything's compatible, what does it matter if you have an expensive or a cheap motherboard? I googled around a bit but couldn't find any definitive answer to this.

The reason is that AMD cpus are shit and aren't rly 8 cores. They are getting sued atm for their "8 cores". Get a i5 4690k. There no dif between i5/i7 for gaming. Also make sure u get a k version which means u can overclock

amd cpus < intel cpus even though more cores, why?
intel just has more efficient cycles in terms of processing, so even with less cores, they will always score higher until amd gets gud (never)

motherboard cheap out, why not?
i always cheap out on motherboard, unless people actually need a decent motherboard for overclocking/the features on the motherboard
overclocking: some motherboard companies have more reliable, higher quality capacitors and such on the board
tl;dryou're paying for features + brand name reliability
thats why people will sometimes buy more expensive motherboards

after reading again, it seems you didnt want an i7 after all, you were just comparing
i dont think you're someone who is going to be rendering a lot because otherwise you'd already have an i7 workstation because render times are horrendous on shitboxes & laptops
so im going to just update my reply with an i5 build soon with $500 USD budget
i just need you to reply with whether or not you need a monitor and peripherals

assuming you dont want an i3 since you keep talking about futureproofing or someone did in this thread so im going with i5 as planned and you aren't a neet so ill just assume ur budget isnt shit

to play anything, but if you're going for non-intensive stuff like csgo, league, just get something half the price like a 380 lol

I would recommend getting a better monitor, atx mobo, and mid tower case. Theres not rly a reason to get miniatx unless u want something small. ATX gives more u room to add shit like a second gpu/wifi card.

He probby get bottlenecked by it in AAAgames. Its easier to upgrade the gpu compared to the cpu.

for the people i've built for:
100% have not gotten a pci-e wifi card, they always opt for a usb one if they do get it
100% dont get pci-e ssd's, they always opt for sata ones
90% didnt get a sound card and the one guy who did didn't even need it and it was a waste of money
plus the back of these microatx cases have 4 grates, a gpu takes up 2 slots, there's enough room for another item
edit: oh i see now, that specific mobo i chose only has the shit pci-e slots other than the gpu one
yeah i would get a different one then
