I played an MMO that implemented Themida at one point.

With that update, ~75% of players were literally unable to load into the largest city in the game because the game client would time out trying to load the damned map.

I was able to get in... by reducing all of the game's textures to 16x16 to speed up the loading process enough to avoid the client going unresponsive to the server.

You heard wrong then cause it is not lol.. All it does is bloat your software with a shitty VM and some basic anti-debug and anti-dump protections. All of which are horribly implemented and easily undone. There are single click unpackers and scripts to completely remove Themedia / WinLicense from files.

Along with that, it has horrible speed issues on larger files or files that are CPU intensive (such as a game etc). As well as major issues with Windows 8 compatibility on various machine setups.

I speak from experience with it as a friend of mine gave me his valid license and copy of Themedia. After about a month of trying all kinds of configuration setups, I removed it and went with other options because of all the problems and horrible protection it offers.

If you want your game protected, protect it at the network layer, not the client itself.


Hm I see, my game is protected from hackers server side. I only seek client side protection so users cannot obtain resources files of the game packed in my .res files which are encrypted. I need a good packer so the script kiddies cant crack it, I know a good crackers can always get in but I'm trying to protect client from not the best crackers.

Thanks for the warning about Themedia, guess I'll try find another...

All it takes is 1 person to crack it then it is done for everyone. You are really over-thinking the protection of your resources. Don't bother with it because in the end they are not really protected.

In most cases, good protection requires a consistent, ongoing effort...and that requires resources. If people want something badly enough, they will, oftentimes, find a way to get it.

I linked to a tool earlier that can grab model files out of V/RAM from running DirectX games...

Going to prevent players from running your game? Razz
