Of course you did. You couldn't possibly use logic, because that would be weird.

start with Java or C#
those are language that are useful, not really hard and will allow you to migrate to other language if needed easily.

but really, programming is not about the language, its about the programming paradigm. Way of thinking to solve problems, decision making, etc.
There is a LOT that you should learn in school/university.

PHP is fun and easy.

PHP sucks ass.

Care to elaborate on that?

You're able to use Python in place of PHP (DJANGO for example) and it's MUCH easier. Plus you can do so much more with python than PHP.

lol how about java
If you go to a high school with an AP Computer Science course, they teach Java. It's kind of hard to learn a first language without a class, because there's a certain way of thinking that is hard to grasp just by reading a book. Once you have a basic grasp on CS though, subsequent languages are much easier to learn.

I think you're right and agree with what you are saying. It's completely true. If you're giving advice to a retard.

wtf...
I'm pretty sure that isn't true.
I don't even think that it's easier. Post some Python snippets and I'll post the PHP equivalents.

potaters, in terms of technology investment, I would advise Python over PHP. In industry, PHP is less sought after. However, you can learn a lot from 'full-platform' end-to-end programming and one of the great things you can gain from learning PHP is server-sided programming conceptually.

In industry, typically applications make use of the three-tier architecture:

1. A database holding data
2. A middleware - this could be PHP, but more commonly is Java (eg. Spring MVC) interfacing to the database (eg. Hibernate, JDBC, etc.). The middleware provides an interface to the outside world allowing access to the data (eg. JAX-RS) either as direct endpoints producing/consuming data or through a front end.
3. A front end - dependent on the content being served. If the middleware is serving web content, we might serve HTML5/JS or Flex or if we are serving to a phone, maybe even HTML5/JS in the form of Sencha Touch.

Learning PHP will allow you to get a better 'big picture' grasp on the essentials of server/middleware programming. However, in industry PHP is not used as commonly as other middleware technologies. This is a simple fact which I can tell you from experience. It doesn't mean there is nothing to gain from it, just that it is not something I would advise as a technology to invest a lot in.

Fastest way to teach someone how to swim would be to toss them in the deep end and see if they figure it out. Even if they do, however, they're not going to be a very good swimmer.
