You're asking for a lot. My computer is as follows

MSI Motherboard that only supports i5-2500k and things that came out after it
4GB DDR3 Corsair RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4670
Intel i5-2500k 3.6GHz
Antec High Current Gamer 520W PSU
Some random 500GB SATA2 HDD and a CD drive.

I bought just the RAM and processor along with a Sharkoon case a few months ago and it set me back 250 pounds. I had the rest already, and collectively that was proably around 170+. That's 420 pounds. 659.77800 U.S. dollars.

I can't run all the top games at high or medium settings. My shit is throttled on my GFX card. Luckily TF2 is a CPU heavy game so it runs well, but still bottlenecks when I'm on high res with high settings.

Well shit :\
Well, you can always get a better graphics card. Afaik, the graphics card I'm planning on getting is slightly better than yours though. So, the bottleneck shouldn't be so severe as long as I get a decent CPU. The cpu I picked is "Good enough" apparently. I mean, 3 ghz is twice the clockspeed of what I've got now. It's dual core and double threaded, however, I don't know too much about Cpu so I'm just going to say that's FINE.

Still, I'm not sure if that's what I should buy. You could be right- I'm most likely going to run into problems with games maybe a year or two from now, but it's shouldn't be severe until a few more years, right?
The issue is you need to make sure you buy a motherboard that can use the CPU you have but will also work with the one you want in the future. Check the socket.

Glad you caught that. the motherboard I picked has LGA 1155 whereas the CPU I found has FCLGA1155. Is that the same thing? I guess I don't know as much about computers as I thought I did...

the best thing you can do right now is wait for sites to have sales, especially newegg, even if its only like $20~ off each thing, it adds up in the end
if you dont want to wait for sales then just save more money up, spending $500 vs $800 will be a huge fucking difference and since it will be more future proof you save money in the long run

also dont get that shit cpu at least get the i3

I don't think so, look up FCLGA socket to see what the FC means.

Maybe when they first came out.

yes it does. Processor doesn't matter most in playing games with the new GPUs which ahve their own cpu and shit. What matters most is the GPU.

i have an i3 with an overclocked msi gtx460 and it plays games just fine. I can max out fine on all games (bf3, mass effect 3) without any probs. I built the whole system at around $500 last year so you can definitely make a better one for same price today. The only game i've ever had problems with was COD:black ops but it was cause it used cpu extensively, but tweaking hte setting fixed it (the game has MT disabled by default).

So don't waste your money on expensive processor if you want to play games it won't yield anything rather spend it on a better gpu with average cpu. You can all squeeze it at about 500$.

Of course you can always make better system with more money but if you're spending that money on a cpu rather than on a better gpu for a gaming rig then thats just stupid.

You don't know what you're talking about. Just because a graphics card is more sophisticated it doesn't mean the fucking game bottlenecks all of the things that need processing to it. The i3 is underrated and is not a bad processor, but what you said is just wrong. You say it runs the games 'fine' but 'fine' for me is 60+fps at all times, and I'm pretty damn sure it goes nowhere near to that, so it looks choppy as shit.

I don't feel like arguing with you especially when i am typing this on the computer with the exact shit fitted in that i mentioned in my post playing mass effect 3 attached a debugger to it watching a movie and running a couple of other programs right now.

Oh and i also don't feel like arguing with you because you use ATI crap so we are in completely different worlds.

To OP: Look at my channel @http://www.youtube.com/user/DEViATEDVids all the videos are made with this 500$ build and almost all video recording sessions had an active debugger attached to the game and then decide for yourself if processor really matters.

Asdfg. By the time I save up an extra 2 million dollars for an I3 and a good GPU, it'll all be outdated. BUT if that's my best option, then I might as well go for it.

EDIT: I3 is actually relatively cheap as hell. If it's just 8 more dollars than the cpu I picked out, then shit.

You're a dumbass. Also, you didn't reply to me saying that 60+fps is smooth, and below is not. You don't run mass effect on a high res over 20-30fps. You just don't.

@Sephi: Save up for an i5-2500k. The i5 is much cheaper than an i7 but is pretty much just as good and will last you a fucking eternity.

you're just dumb man. I'd suggest hours or even days of googling.

If you're playing mount and blade you'll want at least the i52500k, cpu is way more important than gpu in that game.
I ran it on an i7 and it would handle battles of 300 nicely, but when I was raided by a bandit party of 1300 it basically crashed.
