I'm running it atm and I have to say it's really impressive. I love the new metro UI.
However, I'm still wanting a Mac If only if my parents were rich or would give me a few grand for no reason... If only.

Microsoft learned from their Vista release, I don't think that'll happen again with them anytime soon, if ever. They've been really really good with developer previews and betas since. Everything they've made since Vista has had public (semi-private) betas, developer previews, CTP's, etc. for massive testing.
Windows Phone, for example, has had Mango released for months now to Connect members. (Mango is the new version of Windows Phone coming soon.) I've had it installed on my phone since they released the beta of it and can't say I've had any issues with it.
As for Windows 8 and this release, you all think this is a beta. It's not. This isn't even alpha. This is a Developer Preview. This is not a public test / alpha / beta or anything close to it. This is specifically for developers to prepare for the Metro change that Windows 8 is bringing. When an actual beta is ready for public testing they will definitely be having one again. Windows 7 was successful hugely in part to the massive public (free) beta it had prior to being ready and released. I think it also helped quicken the speed of the release as well.
