When i try to shut down my pc it takes about 2min-5min to show the shutdown menu. and when shutting down, it takes about the same amount of time (2-5min) to completely shutdown.
This is really irritating, this never happened to me before.

And this problem:
My automatic updates Tab (from sysdm.cpl) won't show up and my PC can't be updated.
P.S. my PC is windows XP sp2.

Seemingly a virus may have infected your file system causing ur PC to run slow and prevents u from accessing the auto update tab. I suggest u run a thorough virus scan (or might as well scan ur HD from other's PC, ur virus def file may be corrupted too).

If you've reformatted your HD twice already, had reinstalled and your problem still persist, then i believe not only you have incurred a virus, but you have an issue with heat causing your motherboard to brake (if I'm not mistaken, your board's capacitor are broken).

But to reassure yourself, let a service technician have a look at it. Very Happy

If a capacitor was blown out the computer would not post. There are many things that can cause this. Disk corruption, a hard drive going bad trying to read and or write to a physical place on disk that is damaged. Memory could be bad. What leads me to believe heat isn't a factor is that it does it sometimes 2 minutes and sometimes longer. If you have heat issues at 2 minutes after boot you have deeper issues.

Yes, you may say that. But most often than not, based on what I've experienced, system units with busted board's capacitor could still run. I do encounter clients having similar problem. This occurred to some system units w/o proper ventilation, and as Martin said he had reformatted his HD twice, and you know what's formatting do right? And virus isn't an issue anymore, same thing with the memory (u'l know if you have a bad RAM). So, what's left?

I strongly recommend that you go see a technician to have a look on your board.

A format and reinstall will not protect your from a virus in every case. A format only deletes the tables associated with a drive, it marks the address areas as free and writable, there is still data on the disk. This is why DoD and other High Security needs operations do not rely on a format alone to erase data. They do what is called "wiping". Here at my shop we format, we then write random zeros and ones to a drive 3 times. Then it is finally smashed.

A boot sector virus will also persist after a format and reinstall.

If it is a virus it could also persist in system BiOS.

I don't think the issue here is software related.

OP can check his motherboard for bad capacitors. You will see them quite easily. They usually bulge at the tops, or have some type of ooze coming out from them. If you see something like that then yes you have bad capacitors. If you don't see that there is no reason to think you have bad ones.

Includes some images of what they look like when bad.

Yes, i agree, but on the other hand, that's an isolated case. Normally you can't expect a PC keeping on shutting down every 5sec - 5min after a successful formatting/installing. Well assuming Martin has this kind of case, he may try doing this:

Really I think he should compile and review everyones suggestion in this thread.

Eventually he is just going to have to go down the list until one of em fixes it. This is one of those cases where you just have to keep hammering it out until it's fixed.

As an aside watch it be something dumb like the CMOS battery is dead.

Since there are so many possible problems;

A. Get a New Computer

B. Take it to a Tech

C. Throw it out the window of a 6 story building and say "FUCK YOU BISH" and then, get a new computer. (recommended)

As for option C, I would suggest getting the new computer then throwing out the old one.

As for me, I'd rather have it diagnosed by a certified technician and have a professional advise instead.

As for me I am a certified professional technician, but yes if you are unsure take it to someone. Otherwise it's like calling a mechanic and saying "my car is making a noise like wudda bump wudda bump, what is it?", same thing here without your box in front of us we can't tell.

Been a few days since OP posted, I assume he resolved his issue.
