The time consumed just to get this working isn't worth the warranty.
And with DD-WRT it's not easy updating this Dir615 E1 version.
On their forums one managed to succeed only to find out the wireless tab is now missing.

And has OP tried AIM from the internet instead of from the software client?

AFAIK OP has only tried the client. Which client I've no clue, there's so many, maybe a different client would make a difference.

I agree with kls85 it's a waste of time. Try a different client.
