Surprised nobody has mentioned Pelles C.

I'd go with Visual Studio though,

I haven't missed any point. Regardless if a person plans to get into programming for general purpose or for a career they should still take the time to learn basics. Understanding how the environment you use works is far from professional level, it should be one of the first things someone does with the software after they install it.

Suggesting otherwise is one of the reasons most general questions land up on forums like this. Because people don't bother to learn how to use things so they just beg for help.

You're being far too optimistic and not realistic enough. Learning basics of a language is very different to learning the fundamentals behind using a given IDE. Learning is almost always best done by doing it a bit at a time. The same as programming. Get something small working, then move up step by step. Build up a basic knowledge of the language then add onto that. The basic core of understanding is the most important. Dumping beginners on a confusing new IDE when they have no knowledge of the language just bundles errors from both sides all into one. This is the reason universities often do not start students off straight onto IDEs.

Seriously, it's not that hard to figure out Visual Studio.

If you can actually read and manage to click new project, then you more than likely have enough knowledge to get off the ground.

Here are some others I've stumbled on while learning more about WxWidgets:

http://codelite.org/
http://www.anthemion.co.uk/dialogblocks/ (commercial)
http://netbeans.org/features/cpp/index.html

There is also QT Creator/SDK if you're interested in using QT libraries (uses MinGW as its default compiler):

Dev-C++ (Supports C#) www.bloodshed.net
Visual C# Express www.microsoft.com/express/downloads
CodeBlocks www.codeblocks.org

Three compilers I would use Wink
