adding another channel takes a LOT of pins, at least in the hundreds.
quad channel ram is definitely an idea i like, but backwards compatibility is an impossibility.

This is insane, I'm glad I have an AM3 system now.
What the fuck are they thinking? So if I understand correctly we'll have 6 different sockets on the market now?

You mean 5? 775, 1366, 1156, 1567, 1155 (in chronological order).
Unless you're counting both intel's and amd's sockets, but amd has three sockets, am2, am2+, am3.

You mean 5? 775, 1366, 1156, 1567, 1155 (in chronological order).
Unless you're counting both intel's and amd's sockets, but amd has three sockets, am2, am2+, am3. | Don't forget socket 2011.

Unless you're counting both intel's and amd's sockets, but amd has three sockets, am2, am2+, am3. | AM2 is am2+ in most cases. As simple as a bios update can make am2 into 2+. And, am2+ runs am3 cores. Its pretty much different ram type and some other shit thats not that important.

Isn't quad channel overkill right now? Last benchmarks I saw showed triple channel having very negligible gains over dual.
