I use Avast Home edition (Free) I know McAfee is a good one but you have to pay for a license.
I never heard about MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS but I dont say I will never try it.
I dont recommand norton at all due to the fact some virus create a loop and norton can't do anything once the virus affected your anti-virus.

Used both NOD and MES, and I liked MES better. Just a very clean, easy interface and has exceptional detection rates. Also, since it's free and I don't have to care about all that warez crap, I'm quite happy with it.

Both avast and AVG suck. So does Mcafee. My aunt had avg and her BF had Mcafee. They both said no viruses. I switched them to ESET and it found 4 viruses in the first 5 minutes.
You get what you pay for.

I recommend a brain and having Comodo Firewall installed as a backup. You won't need to keep it running, but if you ever think you have a virus, start it up and block the virus from doing anything.
But seriously, the absolute best AV is common sense. I cannot stress this enough. Just think about what you're downloading before you download it. Read comments and such on torrents and other warez. I would not recommend downloading warez of an AV, as that's a very common place for trojans to hang out. Think of it this way: you wouldn't be downloading an AV if you already had one. If you just use your brain, you won't ever need an AV. But as a backup, have Comodo Firewall.
In addition, keep a good virus scanner around. Just a single .exe that scans files. Use that when you know you are downloading something sketchy, save it instead of running it, scan it, and only then run it. You can use it in WinRar so that you can scan something before you even extract it. So having a full-fledged AV isn't really necessary, but if you really want one, go ahead.

If thats the case, why not just add some kind of site checker to firefox. Unless you start downloading torrents and such, you shouldn't even get a virus.

I have used AVG for a few years now, and I am quite happy with it.AVG is free, better than most, cheaper than all. And only taking 15MB of RAM at the current moment.

How? Remote connection infecting you? XP firewall is horrible shit, but w7 and vista actually have a Firewall that works somewhat. You could run solo if you're using w7.
