No it's not.
When you do that, the price of gold will depreciate so fast. The only reason gold is expensive is because it's rare and hard to find. Once you can get it easily, it'll be about as expensive as iron. |

Turn useless metals into useful metals then. Same idea still applies. Use a piece of crap to create something valuable in terms of use. In this case, it is a good thing. |
Gold is a rather useless metal.
It just looks good. It's too soft to do anything by itself, that's why the most expensive gold necklaces you can buy are 24 carats, you have to mix some other metals inside for it to hold together.
Quite frankly, iron, copper, tin, lead are much more useful, just that they are more commonly found than gold. |
So I'll take back the gold part. You could turn very cheap elements into say, titanium. Titanium is extremely useful (durable, light, strong), and also slightly inconveniantly expensive. |

It's been done before, but it was too expensive to be worth it, and it wasn't stable.

It has nothing to do with imitating a big bang. They're trying to find a god-particle or something. Something smaller then a proton. If they find it, they might be able to find out more about the big bang.
Also @ someone who said it's nearly impossible to let 2 protons collide.
It's not. Big and powerfull magnets keep the protons in place. So it's possible to do it, and not that difficult. The difficult part was to let them fly at light speed.

They do this all the time. It is more like quadrillions of needles fired at each. They get a fuckton of protons, and accelerate them in a huge circle (a collider) so that they reach really high speeds, and wait until particles collide, in which case they split apart and their remnants are caught on ridiculously sensitive sensors. It's been done before...many times. This time it is just a lot bigger.
