the core 2 duo and the core 2 quad's life won't get shorten. ever since Intel made Pentium4, if the thermal sensors are reading a high reading a high temperature, it would automatically downclock the CPU, or even restart your computer. The default heatsink that came with your motherboard or CPU is just not good extreme overclocking, ( I tried that before, my computer restarts every 2 or 3 minutes ). Overall, if you overclock your CPU and maintain your CPU's normal temperature, the life of your CPU won't be effected.

I built my pc with intentions to OC my q6600. I didnt have much knowledge about doing it. I knew cooling was essential and not to raise the volts too much. But i did it anyway.
I can get 3.2ghz without raising the volts. The temp were exactly the same as 2.4ghz.
3.9ghz is about as high as i'v been. Im scared to go further. I had to raise the volts just a tad but the temp didnt go up much.
But i used an after market heatsink and fans.
I must say though, they keep good temps. My old CPU was hotter then that at idle. Heres a screeny of a 3hour stress test. I was only running at 3.2. I picked the option in Prime (max heat)
Screen
This was also done before i lapped my CPU.
