yes, it gets within 1 fps of it while doing intense gaming.

and if you overclock the 4850 by 20%, you can get it faster than a gtx 280. and the 4850 is only $170-180

Intel sounds pretty straight foward as far as OCing goes. AMD used that HTT crap or something. Unsure.

I'd go with Intel. They overclock much better in all budgets (especially with the Pentium Dual Core series), and are similarly priced, while outperforming most of their competitors.

Yes, the HD4850 is faster than the 8800GT, but it isn't cheaper than it. It doesn't retain the same price vs. performance ratio as of the 8800GT, but it comes awfully close. The HD4850 is a bit faster than the 9800GTX, but it is slower than the 9800GTX+. I've never seen an HD4850 hit over 10% in overclocking, mostly because of the heat issue with a single slot cooler (in reviews, they only get an average 5.5% overclock on the GPU and RAM). This topic is for Intel vs. AMD CPUs, not ATI vs. NVIDIA.

ok.. so far i've decided to use:

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 mobo
INTEL Q6600 CPU
ATI 4850 GFX
500GB SATA HDD
20x SAMSUNG DVDRW
650W PSU (is this enough? or too much?)
i'm undecided on a case yet

Depends. AMD comes out on top every now and then. Same for Intel. Right now Intel's at the top but its bound to switch places. Once again AMD gHz != Intel gHz.

yea i guess they must even out somewhere along the line, since the intel will be more compatable though i'll stick with it
