In that case, couldn't you have just as easily provided him with the instructions needed for his fix rather than link to another web forum?

If he does not know which entries to delete after running on hijack this then one of the ways to get help is by going to the hijackthis forum and post his list and let the experts from that place to help him. Now how can his post be advertising if all he is trying to do is help?
If he has no patience for the experts to respond then he can try to do it himself by going to a site that analyze the hijackthis log file

Agree with that because most of the time a spyware will creat a backup of itself deep within the registry. If you use a antispy program and it removes it. After you restart the spyware still comes back.
If you manage to get rid of it for good, the damage is already done and the performance of your system will not be as agile as it was before.
One spyware called "CnSMin" wrecks havoc by installing hardware based drivers your machine and the only way to get rid of it is to either format or remove the entries deep within the recovery console.
So it's better off to go into safemode backup your data and do a fresh install. |
Sometimes, though, viruses will infect a good bit of you data, so it can be hell to try to get rid of, even after reformatting.
I say do the Hijack This thing (I use that a lot).

Bah. Good point. I didn't consider he'd need help analyzing his HijackThis log. I thought everyone used http://www.hijackthis.de/ already.

use SmitFraud (google), it cleared it up when it happened to me. Everything you just said has happened to my computer. You went to a website with either porn or free movies or something and downloaded some plugin that you needed which completely screws your computer over.
