| As far as I know, a .tmp file in the clipboard will be a raw uncompressed (essentially a bitmap) file.

Indeed it is.
Saves them as a 'scrap' file, but the data is essentially RAW, as it can be passed into most programs (by paste or whatever) that will understand its structure.

TRANSPARANCY FTW! |
Dude, did you read the first post?
I didn't ask which format to use.. |
I know, but didn't you read the replys to the first post?
This is just showing you that you can save a screenshot in paint without having an enormous file.
/facepalm...

That depends entirely on what you are trying to achieve.
.PNG doesn't have the best filesize for example. A .gif would. Although you would lose some quality in the image, but still keep the transparency.
There are many different ways you can save JPG's. Provided you have the right plugins for a program such as photoshop for example, you can create files that rival the quality and size of PNG's.
Then there is TGA etc. So many. You can't just say "this filetype is the best".

Yes.. it is true..
But what I meant is, I think .png is the best format to save screenshots, that you are going to upload somewhere.
If we add the file size to the quality (+ it is viewable on all OS.. unlike TGA, without proper plugins..)
BTW.
"... A .gif would. Although you would lose some quality in the image..."
some.. is quite.. umm.. the wrong.. word..
I would say a lot..

I'm wondering why jpegs are so abundant these days, when a PNG doesn't use that much more space and gives far better quality, with 5-25mbps connections being standard (depending on your locale), it's not that big of a deal to have big pictures. Sure jpg's still have their place, in places where quality is an issue, or pages loaded with images, but I just can't stand the compression artifacts
