He wants it to be around $500. He doesn't play games, and he wants his data backed up (he has lots of stuff that he can't afford to lose). I went ahead and put together this:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=22068948
Two SpinPoint F4s (already a lot more space than he'll use), and a RAID controller for RAID 1.

Please leave feedback and suggestions. I was about to go with a Sandy Bridge i5, but I looked up a comparison and the Phenom II x6 beat it.

Get a 1 TB hard drive and bag the raid card. Raiding two crappy hard drives is a stupid waste of money. You also realize that the mobo has raid 0/1 anyway, right? If your intention was to do raid 1 for data security, don't even bother. Hard drives don't just fail without warning under normal conditions.

Congratulations! You just bought twice the space for 50 dollars less! With that 50, get this:

Nice silent HTPC card, he'll be able to watch a movie once in a while. To get an 8400 GS would be a terrible idea, those things are outdated pieces of junk. Other than that, it's pretty good. I hate cheap cases, but if it suits you, fine.

I just built this a couple weeks ago so rebates are going to differ but it's a starting point. Was about $400 total with rebates and all other expenses added.

amd x3, overkill as is. was like $20 over a dual core at the time so i figured fuck it

gigabyte mobo, you WILL need to install the ethernet drivers to get internet, w7 does not install them by default

dvd drive

some 5450

instead of fucking with raid arrays he may just be better off just storing important shit in the cloud or backed up to a usb drive. all my important documents just go into my dropbox account automatically. up to 8gb of space is free.

I realize backups are unnecessary with today's hard drives, however he is convinced that he needs a backup. Also, he wants to spend $500. No need in saving $100 if he's willing to spend the extra money. Phenom x6s are sweet anyway.

Also, he currently has a 720GB hard drive and he's only using 50GB of it and he's had it for months and doesn't know you have to empty the recycle bin. I'm pretty sure he doesn't need a 1TB drive. He's convinced that he needs his data backed up, so I figure this is a pretty decent way to do it. Also, I got an external card because they give much better performance in RAID configurations than onboard controllers.

Video card was a nice suggestion though.

@slovach, he really isn't computer-savvy. He couldn't even figure out backing up data onto an external hard drive himself, so I figured it'd be better just to have it done automatically without him even really knowing.

edit: Should have mentioned that I already have a 400W corsair.

Switched it around a bit. Got rid of external RAID controller because I realized it really isn't necessary. Got a cheaper Phenom II x6, Gigabyte mobo with onboard video (4250), switched to slovach's DVD drive.

Why does he need a Phenom? He's not gaming or photoshop, is he?

Performance does go beyond games, you know. No game could even use six cores in the first place, so one couldn't even justify that's what six cores were for otherwise. That's like saying you only need a P4 instead of an i5/i7 if you're not playing games.

there is literally no way you will ever need 6 cores for what you are trying to target.

2 is plenty let alone 6

oh man these SPREADSHEETS run so well on this 6 core system!! no.

Biostar sucks? I have heard their lower end motherboards ($40 below) suck, but not the higher end ones

Sub total is $465.87

-A quad core for multimedia task
-A graphic card so it does not share system memory and useful for setup dual monitors
-It has a 500GB for OS and a 1TB for storage
The 1TB is a green drive as I doubt your dad will be access the data all the time. Also these guys runs extremely cool.
-A single piece of 4GB so there is upgrade room for more ram.
