So I had borrowed a camera from a friend for the weekend but when I returned it, he said I broke it. It's an old camera so it still uses mini DV tapes. The metal holder part where you insert the tape doesn't snap into place, which doesn't make it close meaning the tape can't be used (I later found out if I pushed the metal holder thing really hard it would snap into place). Anyway I just assumed he knew about this because it was like that when he gave it to me. So now he wants me to pay $500 for some shitty DV camcorder he bought back in 2002. Legally, do I have to pay the $500 or it's current value since DVs are pretty much crap and old technology.

Just to make it clear, I don't know if I'm going to have to pay for it yet, he just made a lot of threats and said he already told his parents and all that crap.

I agree. If you are 100% certain you had no doing in the damage, tell him I didn't do it or have anything to do it therefore I am not paying.
Also if you did break it, you don't pay him for how much he wants a new one.
That's like saying, if a guy smashes my $200 car, he has to pay me $500,000 for a Lamborghini I want.
You pay him for how much his camera was worth when he bought it.
So if he bought it for $200, you would pay him $200 to buy another camera.

I'm not sure about proof. All that happened was he went home for lunch (he lives really close to the school) then handed me the camera with a little black carrying bag, and when I got home I just took it out and started using it. I'm starting to think he just wanted to fuck me over so he can get a new camera.

I found a picture of what the camera sort of looks like. It's not the exact same model but you get the point. See that metal holder that you put the tape in? when you try to close it it doesn't snap and he's saying I broke it. The camera itself works fine

He cant do anything without proof i.e photos of before and after it being lent, also if you do have to replace/pay get him to show recipts so you know its true value.

But there is nothing he can legaly do to get money from you, enless he can prove it and back it up with evidence
