Your not screwed if your hard-drive is damaged. Get an external memory storage like flash drive or ehdd, and then quickly transfer all your important ones in the time it takes before it crashes, then buy a new hard-drive and re-install that. Or install a new hard-drive and go to BIOS and choose that one as your main one.

A new 320 GB hard drive would actually only run around $65.

You can either check it physically and look to see if it's burned, or hear that it's spinning funky. Or that you can't save anything on your computer. Or you can get some type of computer checking tool, found in the sticky above your thread and see if you can check the status. Madman's 320 GB idea is more then enough memory for a normal gamer and high school student. I run my laptop with 140 GB and it's almost nearly full for a few years.

Dust will never do this to a computer, unless you live next to a saw mill. Besides, fans should be able to keep dust from settling into your more important components.

Your HD is enclosed, if even a speck of dust gets on it, it could ruin the drive.
They are manufactured in extremely clean environments, where they wear suits to prevent anything from their person fucking up the drive.

Same problems can be caused by different sources.
