Personally I think the only reason people use XP and vista is because everything works on xp (vista sort of) and because 80% of programs are written as executable so they open on xp (and vista!). Ubuntu on the other hand is a great operating system and is better than XP and vista BUT it is not compatible with .exe or any other windows programs unless you use a program called wine, but does not guarantee that it will work 100%. Same goes with a Mac. It has a smexy GUI but again, you need special programs like cross over to run windows programs.

In a couple years people will smarten up and ditch xp and vista. Then it will be a battle between Linux and Macintosh os.
all other Os systems phail

Personally, I think Vista is one of the most stable OS's out there. I love the GUI, and its perfect for me. Very Happy

I like Vista a lot, but I'm still using XP because I want to wait until SP1 comes out for Vista before I switch to it.

yeah Vista's GUI is pretty good but i personally haven't tried linux or macs so i can't really compare them. xhale's right though, if everything worked on linux and mac that works on windows, then i would probably be using them than windows.

oh yeah and i use XP, not Vista, because the Vista drivers for my laptop aren't that good and "stable" lol.

You think I don't know that? It still crashes all my programs and randomly tells me that some DLLs stopped working 0.o

Well my hardware = crap/phail
I have almost nothing on my laptop so i'm surprised that it can even keep up with vista's layers and layers and layers and layers of graphics which are just covering the old ugly WIN 2000 "classic" look Rolling Eyes

No.

Mac OS absolutely sucks, it's even worse than Vista. Due to how proprietary it is it can't and won't ever become mainstream. If anything I see Mac OS dying off in the near future.

Due to Vista's poor reception, Linux gaining marketshare is very possible, but I'm not holding my breath. XP is an excellent OS and the most likely scenario is most will stick with that until Vista is fixed, or MS finally ditches it and releases a new OS, which isn't scheduled until 2009.

Ubuntu is decent, but WINE is still far from perfect, and without widespread program support an OS is useless, plus it's nowhere near as user friendly as Windows.

I've tried selling machines with Linux before, nobody gives a shit about them, they want what they're used to. Remember it's not us enthusiasts that decide which direction the market goes, but the average joe's.

Vista's Interface is horrid. It makes the whole operating system seem sluggish, even if it isn't.
