I am planning to buy an nVidia 8600GTS 512 mb GDDR3 for $160. But then I saw a nVidia 8600GT 1GB Mb DDR2 for $140. I am just wondering what would be better and what is the difference between GDDR3 and DDR2?

And if you are wondering why I am getting an nVidia 8600, its simply because the 9 Series is coming out. I don't want to buy a high end 8800GT while the 9 series is coming out in about two months.

I doubt you would ever use that 1gb of RAM so you might as well get the smaller but FASTER RAM. More expensive but better.

No, 512 XD. Faster RAM and its enough.

PS. GDDR is optomised for gfx cards.

Modern games will happily chew up that much video memory, but it's not like it will really matter much when it comes down to it, since the card itself doesn't have the horsepower. It's more marketing than actually being useful.

Actually, I'm not even sure that it's actually all video ram. I read somewhere the other night that it's actually just using the turbocache bullshit and mooches system ram.

I just grabbed an x1950pro for $89 that will eat the 8600gt alive. If you're going to spend that much, save a little more and get a 256meg 8800gt, they go for like $209 these days.

But $209 is all I have :3
Well, I have $230, but that was going to used for a new PSU and a video card.

So just wait for a 8800GT?

You can't overclock RAM...

And he's referring to the ATI Radeon card.

Yes, yes you can, it will match your CPU's FSB though, and of course you can tighten all the timings while you're at it. As for a video cards, you can most certainly screw with the memory speeds, and the timings if you're feeling cool enough to fuck with a BIOS.

UnLmtD is simply baffled because nuginu has seemingly overclocked his card to such obscene levels that he physically materialized another 256mb of video ram.

How would it be possible? I just don't see where you would get any more RAM out of the car.d

You don't "add" more ram, you increase the frequency of the memory, thus it will working faster.
