I honestly hands down admit CE is one of the most powerful and ingenious pieces of software I've found and it puts the complexity and that magnitude power at your fingertips.
And for this when I'll have a decent income I promise I'll be grateful not only with words like I am now.
So I've just downloaded CE 7.2 and installed it. I've used CE in the past and didn't pay attention to AV alerts. I find it obvious that a tool such as Cheat Engine can't possibly pass unnoticed by AV's, by its nature.
But now as I read that it comes with 3rd party software I said I'd leave the AV running. And it didn't report CE installer as a malware but notified about some activities.
Now I'm not saying that CE would be a virus or whatever but those activities caught my attention:
It accessed among others, files in Windows directory as net.exe, sc.exe, icacls.exe that I've read they're used to start/stop Windows services with elevated rights or modify files and folders attributes. After a "windowsrepair.exe" notification popped up, I denied access to this and it said the installer is modifying the registry at something like ControlSet001\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL.
Bottom line I trust and installed CE as I trust the author but all went not quite light heartedly.
I hope no one would mind, especially Dark Byte. |

windowsrepair sourcecode:
https://github.com/cheat-engine/cheat-engine/blob/master/Cheat%20Engine/windowsrepair/windowsrepair.lpr
Some programs install a cheatengine entry into that registry entry which will then prevent ce from running. windowsrepair.exe repairs your windows install by removing those entries
net.exe, sc.exe: Remove the badlion malware some people have ( link )
icacls.exe: Add read/execute permission to the CE install folder (needed for UWP dll injection, as normally UWP apps have no file access to program files) _________________

I appreciate your explanations. They weigh a lot.
Reading them and the links, it all makes sense now, I got it all wrong in the first place thinking windowsrepair would be 3rd party software. |
