The addresses I find that seem to reference health do nothing when I freeze or change their values via cheat engine. I'm using the pSX emulator.
I suspect that cheat engine simply isn't showing results for the proper memory regions. This is an issue I've noticed when trying Cheat Engine on different emulators: Different Cheat Engine settings are needed to make them work with a given emulator.
Any ideas on what settings might be necessary? I've already ticked all the following three boxes in Edit -> Settings -> Scan Settings:
"Scan the following memory region types:
- MEM_PRIVATE:Memory that is private.
- MEM_IMAGE:Memory that is mapped into the view of an image section
- MEM_MAPPED:Memmory that is mapped into the view of a section."
I have tried the three different Debugger methods in the Debugger Options. When I was hacking via an old version of the PPSSPP emulator I had to change to "Use kernelmode debugger" in order for cheats to work, but then it stopped functioning when I used the most recent PPSSPP emulator. I bring this up as a general example of how I'm facing walls with cheat engine when I move between emulators.
I followed the instructions in the following video to "open" physical memory, but I don't know if it's the same as "attaching" physical memory.

Either way, I have followed those instructions and I still can't manipulate health in Mega Man X5.
It seems that, in a new game, the player character begins with 32 HP. But locking this value does nothing to the in-game HP. All attempts to look for different representations of player-character health have failed.
