Since you're fairly into religion and the nature of man, I feel like you might enjoy this book I'm reading now. It's called The Brothers Karamazov. It is set in 19th century Russia just at the beginning of the weakening of the church to science. I'm only halfway through, but there has been a lot of good stuff so far.

from paranormal readings i've had about the Bolsheviks, the govt at that time went out of their way to cover up the church's retaliations.
and these 'retaliations' were divine miracles, not done by the unarmed priests but... by the things the govt was trying to 'clean up'

you accidentally shoot one jesus idol and it doesn't stop bleeding. enough blood for a crowd to gather and pilgrimage to start. from an idol. scary shit man. the exact opposite of what you were trying to accomplish.

i also recommend Dostoevsky's Notes From Underground. crazy how a book over 100yr/o still applies to people today
