Recently landed a job as a server at a local Creperie that's putting together a wine list. They open in a week or so. Got to talk one on one with the owner who's really passionate about wine. He's given me the best possible evening hours and wants me to put together a wine list to merge with his as well as be there to assess any wines vendors try to sell to us. I'll also be handling the training for other wait staff.
The dream, it's happening.
I fly up to Napa to take my WSET 3 certification December 15th.
Getting laid off from oilfield a month ago ended up being a really really good thing.

It's to have a hand in an upcoming business with a strong wine section. Hopefully grow from there as the restaurant expands until I make enough to open a retail shop or become a wine sourcer/buyer for a big restaurant or store.
This is the first step towards getting some real experience, and I wasn't expecting to be in this position for another 2 years or so. I just turned 21 in August and I've proven my worth to my Employer to the point where he wants me to handle a large amount of the wine section of the restaurant. I think that says something being he's very passionate and into wine himself.
Even in the worse case scenario, I have been given the best possible hours among the waitstaff in an affluent part of the city. Going to be doing very well just serving for a while.
This restaurant is small and has a smaller wine lists. In larger fine dining restaurants, the head Sommellier(wine server) and or wine director are usually listed directly after the Chef and Sous Chef. At least it seems to be the theme around New Orleans and the places I've checked in seattle.

No clue honestly. Drinking and trying new wines started as a hobby. I love to cook, so I really enjoyed doing pairings. When I get new hobbies I put in a lot of research, I ended up studying wine a lot. Got a decent oilfield job but knew oilfield was going to shit so used some money to pay for my certification course and here I am now.
I originally thought I'd end up doing a software design job or something similar, but then I saw what that's actually like and it made me hate it, which put me off of going back to school(read back into more debt) right away. I was at a loss of what to do with my life in the future so I just took a hobby and stuck with it. Was either going to go to culinary school or try to learn more about wine. Wine ended up being the more affordable.
Kind of just bumbling through life and waiting for something to finally stick. This is looking promising, and there are a lot of places to go with it once you have some established experience. If this restaurant takes off, I have my name on their wine program fresh at 21. That's awesome on a resume for the future.
