I made a thread about a budget computer build a few months ago but decided that if I was going to build a computer, I'd do it right and save up to get all the high-end stuff. However now my current laptop has gotten to a new low. Keeps crashing and falling apart, and the wifi card has stopped working as well. So I decided to get myself a mid-range laptop.
Now I've found some good deals on laptops with mid-range graphics cards that support DirectX 12, however they have dual core processors. Think this will do or should I pay a extra for a quad core processor?

If they have HT enabled then its fine and shouldn't slow you down.
The performance of games doesn't depend upon CPU though but the GPU. Some games may have a lot of cpu usage though (the one i can remember is watch dogs) but you're going to be fine when it comes to most games with a weak cpu.
If you post the specs then we can better answer the question.

Thanks.
Yeah, I had been using CPU and GPUboss.com but wasn't sure if it'd be wise to buy a computer with a dual core processor because of new and future games possibly making more use of multiple cores.

Well, I ended up fixing a lot of software and hardware issues with my laptop and now it runs OK again. Got some extra money saved up and a new job, so I'll be building a desktop PC after all. I'm still trying to decide on which processor I would get though.
First I was gonna get an AMD FX 8350 since it has a high clock speed, low price, and 8 cores. However, when comparing benchmarks with an Intel Core i7 4770, the i7 scores a lot higher even though it has a lower clock speed and only 4 cores.
Even when comparing it to an i5 4590 (which has an even lower clock speed), the i5 scores higher.
Why is this?
Also, I heard that you shouldn't cheap out on a motherboard but I don't see why not? As long as everything's compatible, what does it matter if you have an expensive or a cheap motherboard? I googled around a bit but couldn't find any definitive answer to this.

get a dildo and shove it up your nose xD
edit: but srs tbh if ur gonna buy a 500 dollar laptop, i rather you just build a pc with no gpu and only an i7 and bear with it, because at least then you arent wasting money
ill answer everything i can remember in your post
amd cpus < intel cpus even though more cores, why?
intel just has more efficient cycles in terms of processing, so even with less cores, they will always score higher until amd gets gud (never)
motherboard cheap out, why not?
i always cheap out on motherboard, unless people actually need a decent motherboard for overclocking/the features on the motherboard
overclocking: some motherboard companies have more reliable, higher quality capacitors and such on the board
tl;dryou're paying for features + brand name reliability
thats why people will sometimes buy more expensive motherboards
after reading again, it seems you didnt want an i7 after all, you were just comparing
i dont think you're someone who is going to be rendering a lot because otherwise you'd already have an i7 workstation because render times are horrendous on shitboxes & laptops
so im going to just update my reply with an i5 build soon with $500 USD budget
i just need you to reply with whether or not you need a monitor and peripherals
assuming you dont want an i3 since you keep talking about futureproofing or someone did in this thread so im going with i5 as planned and you aren't a neet so ill just assume ur budget isnt shit

to play anything, but if you're going for non-intensive stuff like csgo, league, just get something half the price like a 380 lol

I fixed up my current laptop and saved up some money so I am going to buy a desktop instead. Should have maybe edited the title of this thread to avoid confusion.
My budget is a lot higher now. I'm just trying to decide on which processor to get (was also trying to decide on a mb but that has been settled now, thanks).
Probably going to get one of these:
FX 8350 - 800 EUR - https://www.dragoncomputers.eu/8350840974508
i7 4970 - 1000 EUR - https://www.dragoncomputers.eu/Gigabyte479836974508
They have roughly the same specs, only different processors and motherboards. Will be adding a 2 TB HDD and 240 GB SSD and liquid cooling.
Was trying to keep the price around 1000 EUR but if it's really worth it I'd bump it up to 1150 to get a better processor.
Edit: Shit, I started writing this reply before you added the second part of your post but wasted a lot of time comparing PCs before posting. thanks tho.
