|
|
I have a 6-year-old pre-built Acer PC with a Vista MBR. Several years ago, I unknowingly corrupted it by reformatting with a Windows 7 DVD. But before I reformatted, I made some Recovery DVDs. This recovery is spread out among 6 DVDs.
I used to think recov CDs were only used to fix infected computers or get important documents back. But using these recovery DVDs, would I be able to fix the MBR?

So you want to re-install vista over 7??, yes it's possible to fix but using one of those life CD's (ex: WinPE or PartPE), then format the disk partiton to NTFS, that should fix it.
other way (not tested), is to open the installation disc (of vista's), and delete the 7 partition first, then create the partiton and continue.

Yes I believe the recovery DVD should take care of the MBR too since viruses and such can also screw it up. I would simply try restoring with them and see if it works. Alternatively take care of the MBR problem first:

It's been a while, but I remember using bootrec /fixmbr and/or bootrec /fixboot from the built-in recovery console without repartitioning or reformatting. I seem to remember that things got a little more complicated when bootloaders moved to drive UUIDs vs partition numbers, but I don't remember exactly why or how.

I find that even if the files are recovered media files still are corrupted because the arrangement of data changes.

So, with that said, I'd like to thank Dark Byte and everyone involved with CE, including all the excellent folks who have posted their own fine tutorials along the way. I think this is an excellent application and the community here is extremely courteous and helpful -- a rarity now-a-days.
