Is it that expensive to render the ocean drinkable? I can't fathom going thirsty in a state with 3,000 miles of coastline.

pretty common knowledge cali is going through a drought. idk if 1 year is realistic though
and yeah apparently desalinating water is expensive, but research into graphene could prove useful

The article does say that California has one year of its water left, but it's a misleading stat because its assuming no more rain will fall in California for a year, thus not replenishing the water supply at all. In reality, California will not run out of water next year or anytime in the immediate future due to the natural replenishment of rain.
From what I know about water desalination, the current techniques work at costly rates and governments are a bit hesitant to go and spend money to build water desalination plants only in fear of becoming obsolete on world standards a few years later. The whole idea of using energy resources to create more energy resources seems redundant in its nature.

That's interesting, thank you for posting the link. It would be interesting if the author described the contents of the ground reserves, as well.
I read this on the Wikipedia entry on Desalination:
If a cubic meter of water equals 264.172 gallons, that works out to like 5 gallons / penny. If Californians are really hurting for water, I suspect it is because corrupt politicians are colluding to drive prices. Some new nuclear power plants could solve the energy problem and the water problem simultaneously, albeit while introducing new, lesser, problems.

If you learned (And retained) knowledge in economics, you should realize that the total cost of operating a desalination plant involves both the fixed cost and variable cost. The fixed cost is large, while the variable cost is negligible compared to the fixed cost. Looking at how the cost is composed in the Wikipedia article:

We can see that it includes both the fixed and variable costs. So if the government was to build new desalination plants, you would easily see that $0.46 rate go up, how much depends on how long the current desalination plants have been operating.

You could also see the cost go down. Either way, there's no reason to run out of water in a wealthy coastal state.
