First of all, just to clarify, there is a fine line between DAW's, virtual studios, and hardware interface studios.
DAW's (digital audio workstation) is usually geared for editing and mixing sounds that you already have (recorded tracks typically). Most nice ones support vst however so you can generate sound like you would in a virtual studio, which is convenient.
Studios themselves are actually used for generating sound using various equipment like synths and loopers and other machines.
A virtual studio uses digital machines to accomplish this, while a hardware interface studio is used as a single control panel for all the actual hardware you have rigged together in your studio.
What you're looking for is a virtual studio and probably a daw for mixing and arranging.
I like working with Reason, their latest version includes both a virtual studio and daw all in one, but there's no way to crack it because it uses usb dongles, so I'm stuck with version 5 which doesn't include the daw.
You'll probably get some other suggestions like ableton or cubase, they're all fine and you should just decide for yourself through experience.
But whatever you do, don't get attached to FL studio.
I'll kill you.

FL studio to start. Move to ableton when you have a good grasp of how music is made.

The Garageband iphone app to start out, then garageband for mac when you get better, it's what Skrillex and Dead Mau5 use. I'm pretty sure Dead Mau5 was also the first to make some tunes in Windows Movie maker. He's a pro though...
Just find which is the best for you!

you can achieve pretty much the same thing no matter what daw you use, what only matters is how well you can use it
it would be better if you were good at fl as opposed to sucking ass at reason (don't get me wrong, reason rocks)

The reason I suggest reason and not FLS is because Reason emulates an actual hardware rack and teaches you skills that can be applied to a real hardware interface studio, so if you walk into a real studio that has racks everywhere hooked up to protools you'll have a general idea of what to do instead of looking for FLS's spaceship interface.
Note that this is only my suggestion for new learners, as ascii said it doesn't matter what you use once you have enough experience.

oh com'on, its not hard at all to connect inputs and outputs on a real rack :/
The Reason is just an analog imitation gimmick.
you have the same controls in FL, only thing is that you don't see the wiring.
