things you mostly cannot do: run specific windows programs, have supportive nvidia drivers (ati works)

things you can now do: have a command line that lives in the 21st century (bash is far superior to command prompt), modify open source programs to your will, rice like you've never riced before, and much more

I believe there is a misunderstanding with Windows and Open source.
There are open source applications for windows. It's just that the open source model is and will always be stupid for business models.

Really, linux is for casuals. Anyone that says that linux is for the high-end programmer is wrong. A linux programmer is a frustrated C/C++ stuck with only one environment. Linux haves waaay more limitations than windows if you take in consideration applications, usability and business opportunity.

for the common user, if you are a casual that only browses the internet and now and then play one or other light game in Java or a browser game then linux might be for you if you hate windows but it will be no better than windows, its just going to be different.

if you work, don't even think about it. Linux sucks for work.
