COMPULSIVE NEED, you cannot just stop needing it because it has adverse effects, you compulsively need and seek these substances

yeah there's many definitions with different words being used, but they all mean the same thing, and further back up dustins (and mines) point

but what definition says that you can't overcome this, and it is impossible to even try

none, what definition says that it cannot happen to smart people? what definition says that youre stupid if you become addicted? what definition says that you're just able to quit being addicted because you realize its bad?

its obvious that you can overcome addiction, dustin has done it, and is being rehabilitated, but once he was addicted he wasn't just able to "Stop because it was bad", he hit bottom, went to jail, and was FORCED to get clean, if he never went to jail, he would still be using, maybe until he died from his addiction.

I was given an ultimatum; keep doing drugs go to rehab and be forced to become clean, or just get clean myself. what the fuck is the difference between the two. it doesnt change the definition of addiction, just how to overcome it. I wasn't forced, i could have easily hid my problems but my parents showed to me that it was becoming a problem when I was noticeably high, and i decided that I shouldnt be doing that, so i stopped.

and i never said smart people cant get addicted, if i did why would i be talking about this???

but whats YOUR point, I know what mine is, what the fuck is yours, mine literally cannot be wrong, Im just stating the definition of addiction, and why you people dont seem to understand it, and then you reply with shit that makes no sense, and you clearly weren't addicted because when given the choice you said no, a person who is addicted will not easily do so, also you werent doing fucking heroin, you seriously couldn't understand.

I said if youre smart and can look at the problems that are in front of you and the future problems as well, you can overcome addiction. I wasn't doing heroin but I was doing lots of pills that come from opium like tramadol, codeine, and pot but that's not an opium.

well no shit, what does that have to do with my point at all, when I first stated my point you replied to me, I never directly pointed my point at you, just at the general consensus of everyone in the thread. when you replied you said "if you can see what youre doing is bad just stop" , "just stopping" isn't overcoming addiction

heroin can be up to 22 times more potent than tramadol or codeine btw

when you said you were joking about that post you made, i was talking to dustin using your post.

I was applying myself to your point of "you can't just stop being addicted."

I simply just stopped fucking doing it. dealing with those effects of withdrawal and dependencies on those drugs. how is that not overcoming addiction

do I need to post the definition of overcome? overcome doesn't mean stop. when you overcome something you deal with the problem, find a solution, just stopping when you're addicted will most likely lead to a relapse, going cold turkey on a drug like heroin can also lead to bad effects.

Im sure glad you 'just stopped' but you most likely weren't addicted, physically or mentally, like dustin said, not everyone is a drug addict, and its possible for those people to stop. when its possible for you to stop youre breaking a habit, not an addiction.

I'm pretty sure it was an addiction, after all it was my life and my problem.

you're still not getting it. you cant be 'pretty sure', words have meanings and definitions, if what you said happened, it does not fall under the word addiction, it falls under the word habit.

seriously take some time and try to learn and communicate with your words, instead of emotions and experience.

heres a really good fucking page that is saying what I am
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/info/addiction/
small quote from the page
Quote:
What is the difference between a habit and an addiction?

Addiction - there is a psychological/physical component; the person is unable to control the aspects of the addiction without help because of the mental or physical conditions involved.
Habit - it is done by choice. The person with the habit can choose to stop, and will subsequently stop successfully if they want to. The psychological/physical component is not an issue as it is with an addiction.

Put simply - with a habit you are in control of your choices, with an addiction you are not in control of your choices.

I was being sarcastic, and there are probably people and doctors who are people who are saying otherwise against your point, you just have to find the article.

http://www.psychologytoday.com/basics/addiction

"Experts debate whether addiction is a "disease" or a true mental illness, whether drug dependence and addiction mean the same thing, and many other aspects of addiction"
