Hi all, I'm currently using eset antivirus 6 beta and has been serving me well. However, I've noticed that it takes up a large amount of cpu even for an AV. I'm not sure if this is my best option which is why I've come to ask what you feel is the best antivirus and why.

I'm quite happy with Avast's free version. Register for a free account and it's good for a year.

idling in the background it's not using 1% (on a quad core 3.4GHz cpu)

Kaspersky is good because it is very customizable.

definitely avast because of auto-sandboxing. Protects you from script kiddies like Cyorna who use RATS.

It is really personal preference. Just try a few for a little while and see which one you like the most. Most people will just tell you what they like/use. Every AV has their ups and downs.
But don't take Safko's advice.

None, only retards need AVs.

Removing a virus manually is easy, and if you're smart enough you shouldn't get any.

I probably couldn't get a virus if I tried, this isn't like 2002...

As of now I use ESET's free AV beta. Its lightweight and you get the ESET name along with it.

Yeah good luck removing tdl 4. Rofl.
Also that only applies to retarded coders which 90% of them are.

Shows how little you know, just one click, that's all it takes and you're fucked.
Avast and security essentials are a joke.
As for the best av, ESET NOD32. No doubt, this is coming from someone with a good background on malware.
Avira's supposed "detection rate" is only good since it has a high false positive rate same goes for panda etc...
Kaspersky is and always has been a resource hog and is slightly better in terms of all around protection but for detection rate that goes back to eset.
As for freeware, comodo for 360 protection is extremely good.

Only Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning the system from time to time, anty-viruses are useless for fresh, crypted viruses.
