My daughter has recently purchased a new laptop. She has an older desktop (gateway)with windows XP, that she wants to give to her daughter & son. At this point she wants to see that the teens stay in sights that are child safe. With no ability to download illegal content such as porn, music or movies. Is there a way to do this in windows xp? Many friends online recommended that I should buy Internet mac spy and mac keylogger. But it seems only apply to mac computers, i don't know if it can also use on windows......Please do tell me if you have a solution to this…

Thanks so much for your time

Start off with giving them limited account access, not administrator accounts on the PC. Choose one internet browser for them to use (firefox, chrome, IE, etc) and google how to set up parental controls for that browser. (here is internet explorer, for example.)

anti virus software often comes with some form of web content control too, but i can't give you suggestions on which to use.

change the boot priority to harddrive first as well, and cd-rom as second then password lock changes to the BIOS so that they can't run any live CDs unless they were to actually remove the harddrive. (accessing BIOS on a gateway.)

another thing you can do (if your router/modem supports it) is limit internet access on the PC to certain scheduled times throughout the week so she can be sure they're not up at 4am trying to find out how to gain access to porn sites. (here is my wireless routers access restriction settings, yours should be somewhat similar.)

she will not be able to fully prevent them from getting on sites you don't want them on, there are always ways to get around the parental filters, just have to hope they don't find out how.

Two things: Router and Security software.

Time limits are important on your router, so they can only access the internet after school or something.

I suggest you purchase a quality antivirus (I highly recommend ESET Smart Security 4). You can set up sites to be blocked, and block based on keywords, or just automatically block any "undesirable" sites.

And also advise your sister to stay with the kids while they are online for their first month or so of having a computer, so she can get a good idea of what they do online, and steer them away from any undesirable content.

Good luck Lynne! Keeping kids out of trouble on the net is hard (well my mum sure thought so).

Windows live offers a parental control app. You can see it as you install msn.

Well...software parental controls are pretty much useless because there's always a way to get around them... if the person is determined enough. The best way to do it is through your router/modem. Like mine has something like this:

To get into your router just type your default gateway into your browser [to find that out go into CMD type "ipconfig"]

There's usually a password required for it.. It's always something like:

admin
user

administrator
administrator

user
user

Uhh...just google your default gateway/router for the password. You should be able to find it.

Then change the password to your router/modem and you're set.

Anyway, hope you found this information useful and best of luck.

EDIT, just realized this was a necrobump.........

No, they can't. They are MAC spys, they can only be used for MAC.
If you are looking for ways to block porn, you can google for a internet filter, like the one I find on yahoo.
