It's been two months and I still find myself an idiot for having done this. Like I could load a 610MB file into the memory where every XML entry was a separate object. That's like gigabytes of memory for a single file load.

Theres SAX for PHP? Also why were you working with such a large XML file? Was it a database dump or a flat file of sorts?

Yep, there is. Was working on an Icecat database sync for their products (so I can search on EAN in my own database and see what XML corresponds with it) and categories.
