Why are people bothered by rape so much?

I'm just not seeing how it's the worst thing you could ever do to someone, and really can't relate to the fascination with it. Why should rape be classified as anything more than an aggravated assault? Why should a rape be considered such a significant part of a person's back story?

I just don't get it, and this isn't simply a matter of ignorance. I was raped once, and I got over it. So fucking what?
