I've tried it with ubuntu and didn't get it to work, but I think I'll try again since I just found a spare hard drive laying around...

Or just get RemoveWAT from the interwebs. Don't install the kb971033 update (or uninstall it) and you're fine. No activators whatsoever neccesary. It apparently just entirely removes the part of windows that tells it it needs to be activated.
