I used to download them (without paying) until I realized how cheap they were. Then I felt sorry for the authors and artists so I started buying digital copies, but then one day my friends dragged me to a comic book shop so they could buy some Magic cards... that's where everything changed. Now I make a monthly/bimonthly run to the shop and buy a few comics.
Also if you haven't read the newer Venom comics, he's gotten a bit like Deadpool.

It's actually pretty hard to build a collection of old comics. I would read more of them, but I'm already enjoying the modern series too much.

You're kidding, right?
Old comics, of which I mentioned I have many, are all well and good but they don't really have any sort of deep plot development. When I say old I'm not talking about 1980 but the 50s and 60s. Comics of the now aren't insured a good plot but most characters are going to have a back story. I'm not saying that characters from the early days haven't developed. They've had the most time to and have followed accordingly but the comics of today tell better stories than those of yesteryear. My opinion of course.

You're kidding, right?

That's certainly a distinct resemblance.
I do still buy comics, I have pretty much all of the Secret Invasion comics for three or four different comicbook series. That said, Australia doesn't have the best distribution for many comics so I end up downloading a fair few of them. Particularly the older ones which I can't find so that I can actually get a fluid story.

Well I still love a lot of the artwork from the older artists but I think with the access to graphic design software it has massively improved the potential for better looking artwork. I still love the pen and ink comics though, I purchase "The Phantom" every week or so, kind of a tradition for me now. It's cheap enough.

DC Comics, sure, old DC comics have no plot bar a few notable exceptions (doom squad, anyone?)
Old marvel comics had the best stories ever.
Whenever I read new marvel comics, I always have the not sure if want feel.

These are only a few of mine. All the stories from day one. I stand by what I said.
I'm not saying they lack substance in their entirety but compared to today's narratives they're not so flash.

Have you ever read silver surfer 1-18 + FF 48-50? That was the prime example of a flowing story, not the disjointed random shit you see in the avengers. I never really liked the avengers except for maybe the first 10 or so. The same kind of thing can be seen in early Hulk, Thor, X Men, and to a lesser extent Iron man.
I totally know what you're talking about with some comics having little grand storyline, but I wouldn't say that applies to all silver age marvel magazines.
@Up2 my favorite "recent" comics were Spider man 299 and on for a while. I also love Venom, he's the best villain to ever grace tasm.

Just read the FF ones a couple of days ago. Just a story which could as easily have worked today. You're still not providing reasons why you dislike today's comics compared to older ones.
I rather liked Spiderman 2099. You guys should read Kingdom Come and Superman: Red Son. I very much enjoyed those two.

I don't know.
I find the stories and emotional conflicts of the Silver Surfer, Bruce Banner, Scott and Alex Summers, the Fantastic Four, and the Frightful Four more interesting in their comics from yesteryear than now.
Notice Peter Parker was not on that list. Spider man comics now are far superior in almost every way now as opposed to then.
Mind you, if you think that I'm wrong and ]you think that comics now are just intrinsically better, that's fine. This is just my dumb opinion because I grew up reading 50 year old comic books.
I do read comics now. While I strongly dislike superman in general, I did like the 2099 comics a lot, especially the FF ones, they were cool.
Similarly, I absolutely adore Marvel 1602. That shit is the greatest. It reminded me how much I love Dr. Strange.
