so, my PC was working fine for several years, but this morning when i tried to turn it on, it turned itself off after ~10 seconds.
it shows nothing on the screen, but all the fans and lights on the computer indicate that it is running.
i have tried disconnecting all non-essential hardware, but it still has the problem.
any ideas on where to start?

video card might have failed. try to replace that with a possible spare or onboard GPU (if you have one)

-Check your monitor cable or Graphics card
-Check Your RAM and Clean it.
-Turn speaker on and if you heard your logon sound of windows means your monitor cable is damaged or graphics card is damaged.

| If you have a case speaker, plug it into the motherboard as well to hear for post beeps to sound out what's going wrong.

If you can't hear shit your bios is fucked.
Is it automatically restarting every few seconds?
Is it a gigabyte mainboard?

| Reseat the heatsink. I have had this happen on the crappy intel heatsinks with plastic clips. If they don't clip tightly it will shut off after about 10 seconds.

Had this problem with multiple motherboards. Cleared it up with a bios update but from what he's said I think we can determine that it's not constantly restarting just booting and then not displaying anything.
To me it sounds like it could stem from the motherboard, graphics card or monitor.
First I would test the monitor, then the graphics card then the motherboard. I'd also recommend removing seemingly essential hardware if your motherboard doesn't have an attached speaker (one that emits sound only in response to hardware failure). This would include RAM and the harddisk though the harddisk should not be doing it.

It has water cooling, and I seated the heatsink myself, and correctly applied thermal paste, and it has been running at 30C idle and 50C full load since I did that.

Yeah, it does restart every few seconds. And it's an MSI X-58 Pro-E (MSI-7522)

It's not the graphics card, I tested that in another computer. So it's either the motherboard or the PSU. And my friend strongly thinks it's the PSU.
So I am trying to find a strong enough PSU to test.
I had been running a 4GHz OC'd Intel i7-920 for the last 3 years, and the computer definitely got heavy use, so the PSU would of been past it's time.

Well I just need a bit of money and I'll get a new one.
So, I had a Great Wall 900W PSU, and I am looking for a different brand.
Also, what's the deal with 80 plus certified?

| It's a certificate to show that it has at least an 80% efficiency at regular load intervals. I think it's 20, 50 and 100%. So that's energy efficiency, what percentage of power you get out from what you put in. All about the power bills and keeping the world green.
