I think there was an article that stated the monospace families are the best in terms of ease of reading for programmers. Not that I really know what fonts constitute as being part of the monospace family, but eh.

fixed-width characters. consolas is commonly used as the font for the vc++ editor

Nearly everything uses the default font, so it's generally accepted that using LaTeX means you are also using the default font.
