A song of ice and fire (There are around 5 books in this series)
The name of the wind. Possibly my favorite series.
Night angel trilogy. Kind of assassin based. Haven't read in a few years but were pretty good.
But if you are just going to read one from my list make it the name of the wind.

I second a song of ice and fire it's a great series.
But an even greater series is The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind, fantastic series.
