like raping their stories?

So many times I've seen such promising stories raped by a fucking annoying main character. You know the ones, Eternal Wimp, Blank Slate and Bratty One-Upper.

Is this a requirement to sell in Japan?

Only decent main character that I can think of that didn't ruin a good story is Edward from FMA.
Kamina from TTGL was sweet too but he wasn't even the main character, Simon was, and your point applies to him.
Samurai Champloo is a good one too, three main characters, all pretty cool, but no strong story really.
