49 + 49 = 98

buy a shirt for 97
98 - 97 = 1

there is the dollar you have.
there is no missing dollar.

i guess you can't solve it.

100 - 97 = 3. You owe your parents 50 each and give them 1 dollar each.

50 - 1 = 49.

So now you have 1 dollar left from the 3 you had. 49+49 = 98 + 1 = 99.

So you're missing a dollar.

You're the one that can't do math, you typed it our right there

100(debt)-97(cost) = 3(your cash)

Now if we subtract 2 from each side(taking 2 from what you have and giving one to each of your parents, thus decreasing your debt by 2) we have

98-97=1

You're never..ever..EVER adding the damn one. The picture's math is purposely screwed up to throw you off, you have to listen to the actual problem not just look at the pretty numbers. My first explanation was what I just put, only a word explanation.

Simplest way to solve this is not even caring who the fuck has the money. Dont bother with adding and subtracting, just add where all the physical distributions went.

97 to Abercrombie, 2 to parents, 1 to jew self

@Brolock: The 97 is from the shirt, and the one you keep, but as I was calculating gross amount and not expenditures, you add the 1 to the 97. Essentially this is it:

Gross Amount = Sum of Expenditures + Amount Retained

Expenditures = Gross Amount - Amount Retained

Amount Retained = Gross Amount - Sum of Expenditures

This sums it up really nicely actually, and would choose this as the answer if I were OP.

We've both basically given the answer before in different ways, but down to pure basics and simple terms, this one explains it the best.
