Just a question that came to mind. Also it doesnt matter who it is in this case, I just need to know a value, since I was watching something and it said something about the sword strike of a master swordsman with a katana being something around 250m/h.

That seems about right. Especially since they do flick their wrist as they strike which makes the tip go at a stupid speed.

I meant km/h, I refuse to believe it, since that speeds bonkers. I assume if you get hit with that shit, you explode into a torrent of blood, gore and fecal matter.

No. More speed doesn't always mean more damage.
You can increase your speed by positioning your blade thin, allowing you to cut more clearly too.
You'll cut through things more cleanly, leaving less damage, but LOTS MORE DECAPITATION.

Japanese might prefer that because of their whole honour thing, but we westerners always stood by the fact that "Wounded people are a lot worse than dead people".

It really depends on the weapon, a straight-bladed sword moves much slower, and is heavier than curved swords like sabers and katanas. The tip of a straight sword can get very fast if you have the brawn though.
So if we're talking speed with weight behind it, it would be straight swords, and if we're talking pure speed it would be a curved sword.

He's talking about speed, I'm talking about damage.
A katana doesn't always do more damage if it's faster, it helps cut through stuff. Mostly human necks.

"the average boxer's punch measures 750 psi."
psi = pounds / inch^2

1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms
1 inch^2 = 0.00064516 meters^2

average boxer's punch 1 Kg/meter^2 aprox

hit area usually is 0.005 m^2
on earth 1Kg = 9.8N

average boxer's punch force 9.8N / Meter^2
-> 9.8N / 0.005
therefore the average boxer can apply 1960N of force on a hit.

now
a=F/m
a = 1960N / 1.13 kg(( average weight of a sword ))
now you have an Acceleration of 1734 m/s^2
lets say the hit occurs in 1/4 of a second (( which is kind of realistic ))
the speed of the hit would be at 433.5 m/s or 1560 km/h

of course this is all rough calculations but now you can see that 250m/h. is not that unreasonable.

You're doing something wrong here. Mach 1 is ~340 m/s

How can a HUMAN break the sound barrier with a punch?

Pretty sure an average sword swing won't be over 20m/s

Fun fact: if you're ever in a sword fight, it IS better to rely on your hearing if you're able to. Sound is processed faster than sight, so the brain slows the signal down to match one another. So if you can fight with your eyes closed, you're golden.

FYI: this is also how ventriloquists trick us. The brain sees a moving mouth and sound, so it assumes the two are linked. It matters not that it's an inanimate object.
