wouldn't it depend on the person swinging it, the weight of the sword, the shape of the sword (like is it thin or wide), maybe even the size of the sword?

Last I heard, its not the size that matters, but how you use it. Also I just wanted an approximation.

wouldn't this only apply to technique? for example, guy A could be big and strong so he can swing a sword much easier/quicker than guy B who doesn't have much muscle but because guy B is a better sword fighter and guy A has no technique guy B wins.

also, i have no fucking idea how fast. maybe around 100mph for the average person.

impossible

it's probably in the 5-15mph range if that

you use newton's second law for this

F equals ma
there m is the mass
a is the acceleration and
F is the force

to a=F/m

where the F would be calculated by the torque from the sword handle to the place where it hits

there you can have the acceleration of a sword swing.
there if you calculate on a determined distance you can get the time until it hits and therefore the speed of the sword when it hits.

hope this helps

... Speed of the tip of the sword? Hilt? Average of all?
Depends on sword, technique and person.

It really depends on the weapon, a straight-bladed sword moves much slower, and is heavier than curved swords like sabers and katanas. The tip of a straight sword can get very fast if you have the brawn though.
So if we're talking speed with weight behind it, it would be straight swords, and if we're talking pure speed it would be a curved sword.

The average speed of the tip of a sword when fencing easily gets 100 mph. Those are skimpy swords though.

I cam in to say what Gogo said, but it's been said now. I shall ask a question.

Edit- I'll add this. Using v^2 = u^2 + 2as
V - Final velocity
u - Initial velocity (It will be 0)
a - Acceleration
s - Displacement (Distance, could probably use the length of the sword + your arm for max)

I shall ask a question now.

Why do you want to know?

A sword isn't a killing tool, it's a fencing tool.

Just a question that came to mind. Also it doesnt matter who it is in this case, I just need to know a value, since I was watching something and it said something about the sword strike of a master swordsman with a katana being something around 250km/h.
