Well it depends what EXACTLY you are doing. If you are gaming and video editing, yeah, go for the Asus G series its a great gaming and editing laptop, especially with that GTX 460m. I didn't like the the think pads price and you get more with the Asus so I would go with that, but you might be able to snoop around and find a better spec laptop, maybe, but those Asus ones are solid choices.

if you tend to do seriously business ( actual productive work, not facefucking) Thinkpad all the way, don't stop.
Fuck the idealpad series, they are shit.
T series for balance performance and portability
X series for lightweighted
W series for shit that you will never need to do.
quality, support, portability battery life comes before anything in laptop buying.

The first Asus laptop is definitely a better deal with a superior processor, and amount of ram.

8.2pound and 3hours battery life max isn't ideal for daily usage, chances are, you will be dragging that AC adapter where you go. a 460M is too much of what you need in terms of graphical power for a laptop, and i seriously hope you don't plan to run benchmarks all day.
A T420 or T520 have enough cpu power for whatever productive work you will be doing on a laptop, combined with a Quadro 4200M w/ Optimus for any gpu heavy work ( decoding, hardware acceleration, running few last gen games). Granted, you won't be playing any Crysis sequel or BF3 at medium or high setting at all.
The T520 only weights 5.38, while the the T420 weight less than 4pounds, and both of them will have enough battery life ( 9cell can get you up to 30hours)
Here's a super anal review:

Also, thinkpads, not those shitty idealpads.

Well the asus are 8 cell, shouldnt those run for atleast 5-6hours?
The T420's look good but I would prefer 15.6 inches
just a personal preference
and they seem to have only 2GB of ram?
also I dont see anywhere it saying a 9 cell battery, all of them including the T520s
im in lenovo canada
the idealpads seem to have much more powerful specs?
also in terms of i5 and i7?
wouldnt it be better to get a i7 or a high end i5 as that is almost equivalent to a i7(2.00ghz)??

Yeah, and not to mention that there is no graphics card for the $1199 version. Just get the first asus you posted for superior specs, and unless you want to lug around your laptop everywhere, battery life does not really matter that much.
