Eh.. help?

I have 4GB RAM installed and ever since i got this computer it's always been "4GB Installed, 2GB usable". So anyway I've gotten into gaming a lot more and this computer is pushing the limit. I'm savin' up for a new one but i gotta make due with what i got right now... So anyway, how could i fix this? I also noticed my GPU jacked 700MB for it's own use. So.... is there a way i could free anything up or is it all reserved for hardware?

If you're on 32-bit and have a graphics card with it's own video memory, the graphics card will use some of the 3GB max.

As ZacTheSin and Choycolate have stated, if you have an integrated video card 4 gigs of ram installed and 32 Win XP installed you will only get a max of 3 gigs used. Which if you are showing 700 mb dedicated to video, there your other gig.

You can try to increase the size of your Paging File in Windows, this may boost performance, though if you have an IDE hdd it most likely isn't worth it.

Click Start | Control Panel | System | Advanced | Performance | Settings | Advanced | Virtual Memory Change

There you can change the size of your paging file.

I've seen this same problem with 64bit OS as well. Still can't figure out what is causing the problem.

Did a quick google of 4GB Installed, 2GB usable and theres tons of people with this issue and the os's range from WinXP 32 bit to Win 7 64 bit. There's also a ton of suggested fixes.

Thanks for the response.

Yeah, I was on integrated for awhile, but i got a new graphics card hmmm maybe 2 months ago? Everything works great. The integrated graphics (256mb) had 1500mb of video ram so....it was taking about 12-1300MB of ram. The new one (1GB) is taking 700MB. But there's still 1300 left to take. I want at least 500 of that. But, does the graphics card count for the 3GB allowed?? D: Eh...let me check BIOS see what's going on in there. I'll get back to you after i've done that.

video memory is virtualized since vista which is why it reports such high numbers for video memory.

onboard very well may not have dedicated memory of its own.

if you have an old motherboard (ie: right around the advent of 64 bit stuff) you may need to enable a bios option to actually get 4gb visible. it will probably be called memory hole remapping or something similar.
