I think it's cause the ocean is so big, the lightning gets weakened so if it did hit a fish it would be to weak to do any damage. That's my guess.

Fish aint grounded, and it is easier for electricity to move trough water than fish, so yeah; guess what way it chooses?

lightning discharges immediately after it hits the ocean so fish would die only if they were extremely close to the strike.

Because lightning disperses immediately (Because water is a conductor) after hitting the water's surface. So the fish would only die if it were within 1-2 Meters of the blast.

Water is a conductor, when it hits it heads straight to ground. Living tissue is not as good a conductor so the fish are stunned if in close proximity, they will die if they are right at the source though. Given that most fish don't stay near the surface this would explain it.

Electricity, like water will always take the path of least resistance.

You're all wrong.

It's because salt improves the conductivity of water, and the ocean is saltwater. It contains a higher concentration of salt than fish, so the electricity has no reason to go through the fish.

If the ocean were made of freshwater, or light strikes a river (very unlikely), it's entirely possibly that nearby fish could be electrocuted.

Is it possible for water to get "full" of electricity (by full i mean like if you were to pour sugar in water to the point were more can not be taken up).

So the lightening chooses to go trough the fish because the water is "full" (at least close the the point of strike)

water can't be full of lightning, mostly because the lightning dissipates almost immediately after striking.

Fish are grounded, they swim in the largest conductor on the planet.
So if they are close enough to the strike, unknown distance and they get a charge it could kill fish. It only takes 12volts to disorient fish.
If anyone know what a 4 bar phone is, then you know what im stating on this low volt illegal system used to get fish.

Secondly to understand, lightning it is believed to be caused by a negative and positive charge between the water droplets falling and rising in the air. When the one falling hits the ones rising it knocks off ions causing a electrical charge. Sometimes it is a large charge and we see lightning. The charges discharge both ways possibly at the same time. We always think it goes from the clouds downward, however it actually meets half way once a connection is made and we see the strike. But is still one of the many mysteries man wants to learn about.
